Mossel Bay has produced two of the 2006 Diners Club International Winelist of the Year Awards winners this year. Both the following restaurants, Stonehill Restaurant and The Bahia Dos Vaqueiros Restaurant, were awarded the Award of Excellence.

Entries for the 2006 Diners Club International Winelist of the Year Awards were officially opened in April this year when Diners Club International invited all licensed restaurants across South Africa to take part in these prestigious Awards. The Awards, which are aimed at encouraging food and wine-serving establishments to consistently improve the standards of wine lists on offer, have always been held in high esteem by both the restaurant and wine industry.

Through their submission, entrants were considered for a Gold Award, Platinum Award and the cream of the crop will earn “The Award of Excellence”. Some of the judging criteria includes the prices of wines on offer – from entry to top level wines; whether the wines on offer are in harmony with the style of food served; that a good balance and the range of grape varietals between white, red, rosé, blends and desert wines are present; that wines from a variety of districts are presented and details concerning the establishment’s corkage policies are stated on their wine list.

Stonehill Restaurant, Mossel Bay, Western Cape was recently star graded. They received the prestigious gold grading from the Tourism Grading Council. Restaurant grading is relatively new in South Africa and stringent requirements must be met. Below is some of the criteria as specified on the Tourism Grading Council’s website:

Grading Criteria for Food and Beverage (F&B) Outlets

Each establishment wishing to be graded needs to comply with the minimum criteria including the specified minimum criteria per star grading. Thereafter the establishment will be graded according to the criteria listed in this document.

The grading criteria have been developed based on guest expectations. The criteria cover:

· Internal fabric
· Toilets
· Menu and wine list
· Food and beverage
· Services and service
· Housekeeping and cleanliness
· A kitchen Hygiene (check list)

The score for each standard is defined as follows:

Overall score of 84% - 94%
